Influenced by the early death of his father, he began to process his experiences and impressions through <strong>drawing<\/strong> at a young age. After <strong>graduating from high school<\/strong> in 1977, he traveled around Europe and quickly found <strong>an artistic way<\/strong> of dealing with his impressions.  <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In the 1980s, when he was working in the art world, he began to draw and paint professionally. In 1985 he was awarded the first prize by <strong>the artists&#8217; group 79 e.V.<\/strong> in Heidelberg. After numerous <strong>solo <\/strong>and <strong>group exhibitions<\/strong>, a <strong>solo catalogue<\/strong> with etchings followed in 1994.   <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">and the volume of poetry \u201cChasse de Neige\u201d by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rainer-rene-mueller.eu\">Rainer Ren\u00e9 M\u00fcller<\/a>, France.<\/span>[\/vc_column_text][\/vc_column][vc_column width=&#8221;1\/2&#8243;][vc_single_image image=&#8221;1549&#8243; img_size=&#8221;large&#8221; add_caption=&#8221;yes&#8221; alignment=&#8221;center&#8221; css=&#8221;.vc_custom_1640857395370{margin-top: 30px !important;}&#8221;][vc_column_text]<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center; font-size: 16px;\">Joachim Matthias Maa\u00df; Photo: Gudrun-Holde Ortner; <a href=\"https:\/\/www.holdeortner.de\/\">www.holdeortner.de<\/a><\/p>\n<p>[\/vc_column_text][\/vc_column][\/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]<em>&#8220;The viewer who engages with this fine world of images embarks on a never-ending journey of discovery into a distant, foreign land. And every time it is anew.&#8221; <\/em> (Matthias Maa\u00df)[\/vc_column_text][vc_column_text]<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In addition to his serial works such as &#8220;Cherie&#8217;s 5000 Bottles&#8221;, his expressive <strong>portraits<\/strong> in <strong>ink<\/strong> and <strong>watercolor<\/strong> are particularly impressive today. With <strong>light strokes<\/strong>, the predominantly <strong>small-format works <\/strong>reflect inner <strong>emotional worlds<\/strong> that captivate the viewer. Matthias Maa\u00df works quickly and <strong>intuitively<\/strong>. In seconds he captures <strong>sketchy impressions<\/strong> on paper, which are then skillfully colored. <strong>Gentle color transitions<\/strong> contrast with the often <strong>rough contours<\/strong> of the ink lines.   <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Maa\u00df saw himself as a <strong>researcher<\/strong> and <strong>seeker<\/strong>. His pictures have a <strong>contemplative aura<\/strong>, a mystery of their own, and reveal <strong>new levels of perception<\/strong> every time they are viewed. His drawings were <strong>multifaceted<\/strong>. While his &#8220;<strong>daily pictures<\/strong>&#8221; were more of a documentation of his current emotional world, his more complex <strong>grid pictures<\/strong> resulted from weeks of dealing with <strong>profound topics<\/strong>.   <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Maa\u00df was also known for his experience in psychiatry. Some of his works, including the impressive painting &#8220;<strong>The Funeral Feast<\/strong>&#8221; from 1992, are in the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sammlung-prinzhorn.de\">Prinzhorn Collection<\/a> at the Heidelberg University Hospital. The majority of his art is owned by the Heidelberg art collector <strong>Wilhelm Kampik<\/strong>, the founder of the company   <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/arttrd.com\"><b>ARTTRD<\/b><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Matthias Maa\u00df was a well-known figure in Heidelberg, always well-dressed and with a distinctive black and grey hairstyle. Many who knew him by sight were often unaware that they were dealing with a renowned artist. With astonishing<strong> stamina<\/strong> and <strong>intensity<\/strong>, he created works that were often created <strong>in nightly series<\/strong> and transported the viewer into unfathomable inner worlds.  <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Unfortunately, Matthias Maa\u00df passed away on May 18, 2019.
