On the occasion of the 65th birthday of the late artist Matthias Maaß, we invite you to the anniversary exhibition in the Xylon Museum Schwetzingen. The vernissage will take place on Saturday, November 4th and will be accompanied by a thematic introduction by Dr. Hoge.
A complex and bizarre ‘artist’s cosmos’
Maaß, born in Heidelberg in 1958, has used his artistic work since the early 1980s as an outlet for dealing with crisis-ridden moods and reflecting on world events. For him, it was the equivalent of ‘lived memories’. Even at a young age, he used art to deal with the early death of his father and his own experiences. The result is an extremely rich and independent work that immerses the viewer in a complex and bizarre ‘artist’s cosmos’.
The exhibition offers a comprehensive overview of his impressive oeuvre from 1991 to 2019. Maaß’s work was characterized by his deep reflection, intuition and the “atomization of thoughts”.

Both his serial works and his powerful portraits are highlighted. His ink and watercolor works are particularly characteristic, combining sketchy impressions with gentle color transitions and striking ink contours. Whether in his “daily pictures” that reflect his emotional world, or in the more complex raster images that depict deep confrontations with existential themes – Maaß’s works are always a research process that takes the viewer to different levels of perception.
His series of heads are particularly notable, in which he uses the drawing tool and colors as part of the artistic expression to create surprising effects. Maaß’s deep devotion to his art is evident in his astonishing stamina and intensity, which often led him to work all night long.
This anniversary exhibition offers a rare opportunity to delve into the captivating world of Matthias Maaß, whose works continue to remain alive and touch us again and again.
We look forward to your visit
